Many modular homes have roof slopes which would be much too high for the upper roof bearing sections to travel up the highway. If the sidewalls are 8 tall and the roof pitch is 4 12 or 5 12 similar. The hinged roof allows modular homes to be transported on narrow roads and still have a steep roof pitch like stick built homes. Two good indications that a roof is hinged are the sidewalls and the roof pitch.

The exterior walls of most modular homes are installed with lower value r 19 fiberglass insulation that usually isn t blown in. Once the home is placed on the site and the hinge is opened it becomes difficult to detect without close inspection of the trusses. If the home is a double section or triple section home this is where structural lumber headers and a laminated ridge beam are used over the openings to join the two sections of the home together. Resulting in air pockets around electric boxes and wiring.
